I am now retired from the Canadian Army and am looking to get a security guard type job in Ontario and noticed that their are several companies that offer the Ontario Security Guard Course that qualifies you for a license in the province. Is the course you take the same at all of these companies, the prices seem to vary from $199 up to $490.

As the old saying goes - "you get what you pay for!" Contract security here in Ontario is a joke. The "big" changes the Ministry Public Safety and Correctional Services made to security governance just sees guards or those getting into the filed pay through the nose over and over again.
If you just want supplemental income and aren't concerned about getting good training, then go cheap, write the test and apply for your license. Scout around for the most suitable job for you.
All but a very small handful of security guards in Ontario get paid at or very near minimum wage. The majority have to pay for their uniform, additional training and so on.
Depending what you did in the Armed Forces you may have an ace in hand for a higher end company. Maybe look to Ontario Power Generation security. They are a whole different animal.
Good luck.

The material being taught in these courses for the license is mandated by the government and must cover the same topics.
The difference in pricing is based on what the company feels they can charge and get paid for. Also, a difference in pricing may be due to the class being online or in-person (with in-person being more expensive).
As was posted above make sure that the training company is approved by the government and shop around.
Be aware that companies stating that will hire all graduates does not mean that all graduates will actually get hours. It just means that they are listed on the companies books to call if they need staff to fill in a position for a shift or two.
